Thirty years ago a dream took root. The dream of GPIB Jemaat Sangkakala a church in Kebon Jeruk Jakarta. It started as a small oikumene fellowship in 1972. Twenty families gathered in homes and a local school. They yearned for a permanent place of worship.
The initial years were challenging. The area was underdeveloped. Roads were muddy. The nearest churches were far away. Despite the difficulties their faith persevered. They persevered in their hope for a dedicated space for their worship.
In 1979 the location was decided. Then the real work began. Fundraising was difficult. Building materials were scarce. Yet the congregation worked tirelessly. They worked alongside the military personnel in the Kodam complex. They built a temporary structure. They held services even in the midst of construction.
The official laying of the cornerstone took place in 1985. The church was eventually dedicated on April 23 1989. This date became their annual celebration. Not the date of their establishment. The name Sangkakala was chosen deliberately. It means trumpet. A powerful symbol of proclamation and faith.
Through the decades GPIB Jemaat Sangkakala grew. It faced obstacles and celebrated triumphs. It adapted to changing times and technologies. The church serves as a beacon of hope in the community.
