Did you know that the indigenous Tehuelches people called Lago Gutiérrez ‘the eye of God’? Now, gaze upon its beauty.

Welcome to the shores of Lago Gutiérrez. It is a glacial lake in Argentina’s Río Negro Province. Today we will uncover the secrets of this Patagonian gem.

Lago Gutiérrez lies nestled between the Sierra de la Ventana and Cerro Catedral. Imagine this lake marking the division between the Pacific and Atlantic watersheds. The clear waters of Lago Gutiérrez connect to Nahuel Huapi Lake through the Gutiérrez stream.

The lake’s name has an interesting story. After the war against native peoples in 1880, it was renamed from its indigenous name. It became Lago Gutiérrez, honoring a government official. This official, Perito Moreno, paid salaries to the military.

Lago Gutiérrez stretches out before us. It is about 12 km from San Carlos de Bariloche. The lake is elongated and uniform, spanning 16.4 square kilometers. It is nine kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide. The maximum depth reaches 111 meters.

Look around at the lush forests that hug the shoreline. Coihue trees dominate the landscape. The eastern edge features mostly stony ground. The west side boasts varied terrain. There are deep ravines and bays filled with aquatic plants. Sunken logs dot the shoreline. This unique formation results from Cerro Catedral’s eastern slope.

The water is exceptionally clear. Visibility extends to 18 meters. Sunlight penetrates to a depth of 45 meters. This allows light to reach over half the lake’s volume.

Notice the diverse vegetation around Lago Gutiérrez. Coihue, lenga and cypress trees thrive here. Smaller plants include ñire, retamo, palo piche, maitén and bamboo.

Lago Gutiérrez faces a reputation as a challenging fishing spot. Urban development and poaching impact fish populations. However, studies reveal a healthy population of salmonids. Rainbow trout, brown trout and brook trout attract anglers from around the world.

The lake flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It does this via the Limay and Negro rivers. Streams from Cerro Catedral and Cordón del Ñirihuau feed the lake. The Gutiérrez stream carries water to Nahuel Huapi Lake.

The climate here is cool and humid. The average annual temperature is below 10°C. Rainfall exceeds 1000 mm each year. Most precipitation falls as rain and snow in winter.

Lago Gutiérrez supports a variety of fish. Native species include the Creole trout and puyenes. Introduced species feature rainbow trout and brook trout.

Because of its location near Bariloche, Lago Gutiérrez is a popular destination. Tourists enjoy recreational fishing. Many weekend homes and permanent residences dot the area.

The clear waters of Lago Gutiérrez are very susceptible to climate change and have an average surface temperature of 7 °C. Hypothermia is one of the risks bathers must endure. Kayaking is a popular sport on this and adjacent lakes.

As you stand here, remember the original name. Think of ‘the eye of God’ reflecting in these pristine waters. Lago Gutiérrez offers more than just a pretty view. It provides a glimpse into Patagonia’s rich history. It shows its diverse ecosystem and its evolving relationship with humanity.
