Established in 2016 the Milli Savunma Üniversitesi stands proudly in Istanbul. Its imposing presence reflects a rich history. The university is a continuation of the Turkish War Academies. These academies trained generations of officers. They played a vital role in the Turkish Armed Forces.
Before 2016 military schools and academies were under the General Staff. Education and training fell under the Education and Doctrine Command. This command followed Turkish Armed Forces guidelines. Officers and non-commissioned officers graduated from these schools.
The July 15 coup attempt changed everything. A reorganization of military institutions followed. Many military high schools and academies were closed. Students were dismissed. The Milli Savunma Üniversitesi filled the resulting educational void. It now provides associate undergraduate and graduate level education.
The university’s establishment involved a unique process. Initially the president selected the rector from three candidates. The minister of national defense recommended them. The prime minister approved. This changed after a political system change in 2018. The appointment of the rector and organizational decisions now rest solely with the president.
Professor Dr Erhan Afyoncu became the first rector. He started his mission on October 4 2016 and continues to this day. The university’s administrative units were initially housed in the former War Academies Command headquarters. This changed later. A new building was constructed. This building is in the same area as the old headquarters. The move happened between November 2022 and the end of 2022.
The Milli Savunma Üniversitesi serves as a crucial institution. It provides the Turkish Armed Forces with necessary officers and non-commissioned officers. It ensures the continued strength and training of the nation’s defense. It is a testament to Turkey’s commitment to its military and its future.
