What secrets lie beneath this grassy knoll we call Primrose Hill? Unlike its name might suggest, Primrose Hill hasn’t always been a place of leisurely strolls and picturesque picnics. This 64-meter high hill, a landmark in the London Borough of Camden, has borne witness to centuries of history, some chapters darker than others. Opened to the public in 1842, Primrose Hill, the park, takes its name from the hill itself. The name “Primrose Hill” has been around since the 15th century, long before any Earl of Rosebery walked the earth. Imagine, in 1678, the peace of this park was shattered by a gruesome discovery. The body of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey was found here, a murder shrouded in mystery that shook London to its core. Three men were hanged on the hill for the crime, their names forever entwined with the landscape, though later cleared of any wrongdoing. For a time, this tranquil hill was even known as Greenberry Hill, a chilling reminder of that dark tale. But Primrose Hill is also a place of art and celebration. In 1792, this very spot hosted the first meeting of the “Gorsedd of the Bards of the Isles of Britain,” a gathering celebrating Welsh poetry and tradition. It’s said that the echoes of their verses still linger in the wind. Today, Primrose Hill offers breathtaking views of London’s skyline. As you stand here, picture the city sprawling before you, a tapestry woven from centuries of stories, some whispered on this very hill.
