Nestled in Waltham Forest, Woodside Academy has a rich history. It wasn’t always known as Woodside Academy. The school first opened its doors in 1952 as Tyrell Heath Infant and Junior Schools. This was a time of great change in Britain, just after the Second World War. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was a major event celebrated at the newly opened school. They even provided shelter to families displaced by the devastating Tilbury floods of 1953. Woodside Academy’s commitment to its community runs deep, right from its early days. The name changed to Woodside in 1957, to avoid confusion with the nearby Torell’s Secondary Modern School. The school continued to grow, eventually amalgamating the infant and junior schools in 1962. A major transformation occurred in December 2012. Woodside became an academy, embracing a new chapter in its history. At Woodside Academy, history is more than just dates and facts. It’s a way of thinking. Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and evaluate evidence. The curriculum connects Britain’s past to the wider world. Students explore local history, understanding how their community has changed over time. Field trips and visits bring history to life, fostering a love of learning beyond the classroom. Woodside Academy aims to empower students to become informed and engaged citizens, prepared for the opportunities and responsibilities of adult life. From its early days as Tyrell Heath to its present form, Woodside Academy continues to shape young minds and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Waltham Forest.
