Before the renovation the Rue des Alouettes in Lyon was a busy street. Thousands of vehicles sped through daily. Many were just passing through. They used Rue des Alouettes as a shortcut. This caused problems. The street is narrow. It only had one accessible sidewalk. A school with over 1600 children is located there. The situation was unsafe. Parents worried about their children walking to school.

The Rue des Alouettes is more than just a street. It’s a vital part of Lyon’s 8th arrondissement. It’s a place where families live and work. The street was also causing issues for residents. The traffic was loud and dangerous.

After many meetings the city decided to act. They changed the traffic flow. Now cars can only go one way. This greatly reduced the traffic. The number of daily vehicles dropped by 87 percent. The speed of cars also decreased. Now 92 percent of drivers travel under 30 kilometers per hour.

The city also plans a major renovation. A wide pedestrian area will be created. This will make it easier for everyone to walk. The new design will be safer for pedestrians and those in wheelchairs or strollers. A lighter pavement will be used. It will reduce heat absorption during summer. The south side will be protected by stone elements and Lyon paving stones. This will create visual and tactile guidance. Seating areas will be added. On the north side there will be plants. They will act as a safety buffer. Climbing plants on a pergola will provide shade. New trees will be planted on the west side.
