A thousand years of history whisper from these stones. Welcome to Le Val-Saint-Germain. This unassuming village boasts a heritage richer than its quiet streets might suggest. Le Val-Saint-Germain’s story is intertwined with its magnificent Chateau du Marais. Built in 1770 by architect Jean-Benoit-Vincent Barre for Jean Le Maistre de La Martiniere this chateau is a stunning example of Louis XVI style. It has been owned by prominent noble families including the Noailles Castellane Talleyrand-Perigord and Pourtales families. Its park was also classified as a historical monument on March 26 1965.

It was once connected to the Abbey of Vaux de Cernay. A Romanesque nave remains separated by a wall from the 15th-century choir.

Inside you can admire beautifully preserved painted and sculpted wooden furniture. This stunning piece dating back to the 18th century survived the French Revolution. The church also holds a unique collection of about a hundred candle stands. These marbles wood and intricately crafted metal objects were offerings from pilgrims.

For centuries Le Val-Saint-Germain was a site of pilgrimage. The devotion centered around Saint Julienne of Nicomedia. Pilgrims believed she could cure cholera and other diseases. Each year during Pentecost hundreds would come bearing these candle stands. A testament to faith and healing this tradition left a lasting mark on Le Val-Saint-Germain.

Even today you can see a polychrome wooden bust of Saint Julienne. It sits in a niche near the Fontaine Sainte-Julienne. The fountain was once topped with this very bust. The legacy of Saint Julienne’s pilgrimage lives on enriching the identity of Le Val-Saint-Germain.
