Haven’t you heard that Twickenham School has a history stretching back to 1959? It began as Whitton School. This co-educational secondary school now stands in Whitton. It is part of the London Borough of Richmond.
Twickenham School as we know it emerged in November 2016. But its story began long before. Whitton School served the community for many years. By 2001, the buildings were considered inadequate. Plans were considered to replace it with a Catholic Secondary School. However, these plans did not progress.
In 2007, the school was considered for rebuilding. Teddington School was chosen instead. Whitton School was rebuilt as part of the government’s academies program. It became Twickenham Academy in 2010. The Learning Schools Trust governed it then.
Twickenham Academy closed in October 2016. Twickenham School opened the very next day. The Richmond West Schools Trust managed it. In September 2021, it joined the larger Bourne Trust. This trust also operates Hampton High and Teddington School.
Twickenham School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a place of learning. It is a community. The school’s motto is “Aspire, Achieve, Enjoy”. The school focuses on traditional values. These include respect, perseverance, dedication, integrity, empathy and responsibility.
Several notable people attended Whitton School, Twickenham Academy, and Twickenham School. Lauren James is a footballer. Joel Pope and Ben Scott both played cricket. Luke Plange is also a footballer.
