What if a former waterworks garage became a beacon of Argentinian innovation? That’s exactly what happened here at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella – Campus Alcorta. This private university stands as a testament to Argentina’s blend of industrial heritage and artistic vision.
Universidad Torcuato Di Tella is not just any university. It’s an inheritor of the innovative spirit of SIAM Di Tella. This was a renowned industrial factory from 1910. It also carries the torch of the avant-garde Instituto Torcuato Di Tella of 1958. Founded in 1991 this campus in Belgrano has become a hub for academic excellence.
Originally built between 1938 and 1942 the building served Obras Sanitarias de la Nación. For nearly 50 years it functioned as a garage and storage facility. Imagine this space filled with trucks and equipment. Now it buzzes with students and faculty.
In 1997 the property was put up for sale. The Universidad Torcuato Di Tella Foundation saw an opportunity. They decided to participate in the bidding. They envisioned a transformation. Architect Clorindo Testa proposed a design. It would link the main building to the one on Sáenz Valiente Street. In December 1999 the university won the bid for the 12983 square meter site.
The Universidad Torcuato Di Tella campus officially opened in August 2004. The School of Business and the Department of Economics moved into the Sáenz Valiente building. The architecture program started in 2007. The Art Department launched its artist program in 2009.
The official inauguration happened on April 9 2013. The campus now consists of three buildings around a central courtyard.
The Alcorta Building has seven floors. The lower levels house classrooms and a library. There are reading rooms and computer labs. You will find workshops a dining hall and student service offices there. “Eva Perón archetype symbol” by Sesostris Vitullo is on display. The second floor has an architecture workshop. The third floor contains faculty and administrative offices. The fourth floor houses the Aula Magna and a restaurant. A green terrace sits on the fifth floor with an amphitheater and a viewpoint.
The building on Sáenz Valiente Street also has seven levels. It includes public spaces and a main hall. There are classrooms offices and a garden terrace. Catalan architect Josep Ferrando designed this building.
Lastly the Parque Building features a multipurpose room. It also has an auditorium design workshops art classrooms and a neuroscience lab.
Universidad Torcuato Di Tella offers scholarships. These can cover up to 100% of tuition. They also provide honor loans with repayment starting after graduation.
The library offers a vast collection of social sciences materials. This includes digital titles and special archives.
Universidad Torcuato Di Tella’s green terraces minimize energy consumption. Rainwater is reused for irrigation. The building design earned LEED Gold certification. This shows the commitment to sustainability.
In 2022 the university launched a competition for a new building and central plaza. The Parisian studio BRUTHER won the competition. Their design connects all campus buildings.
