Picture the imposing brick structure before you. This is the Mayfair Pumping Station a vital part of Chicago’s history.

Built in 1918 on Elsie Budlong’s former farmland the station dramatically improved water distribution in Chicago’s Northwest Side. Before its construction residents often suffered from low water pressure. A letter to the Chicago Daily Tribune in 1913 described the frustrating reality of trickling faucets and unusable toilets.

The Mayfair Pumping Station’s creation wasn’t without its challenges. Construction faced delays. Inferior lumber was initially used and strikes hampered progress. Even a worker’s case of typhoid fever briefly stalled the project. The official opening in 1919 was less than ideal initially delivering muddy water.

Political battles also impacted the station. Governor Henry Horner famously blocked upgrades stating that wealthy Chicagoans could afford their own water. These upgrades were only completed later. The station’s significance was underscored in 1962 after it played a crucial role in extinguishing the 1961 Des Plaines fire minimizing property damage and loss of life.

The Mayfair Pumping Station’s design is unique. It features an impressive interplay of quadrangles. The smokestack though not original is a striking feature. The original was dismantled in 1958. The station also features an underground bridge for sewer lines built over water mains during the construction of the Kennedy Expressway.

Today seven steam-driven pumps continue their vital work. The Mayfair Pumping Station serves a large part of Chicago and several suburbs. A survey in 1998 confirmed its exceptional water quality and efficiency. It stands as a testament to Chicago’s ingenuity and perseverance a landmark that continues to serve the city’s needs. Its story reminds us of the vital infrastructure that often goes unnoticed yet underpins our daily lives.
