Gazing at Braid Church, can you sense the echoes of a bygone era? This octagonal masterpiece, nestled in Edinburgh’s Morningside, whispers tales of a congregation bursting at the seams. Braid Church, as it stands today, replaced a smaller iron church in 1883. The United Presbyterian congregation simply outgrew the old space. Imagine the excitement in 1886 when the cornerstone was laid for this Italian Renaissance-inspired marvel. Braid Church was designed by the renowned architect George Washington Browne. He crafted a unique building with a central bellcote and distinctive details. Can you picture the bustling activity as it was constructed in under a year, at a cost of $5500? The church’s octagonal form is quite unusual, reminiscent of an Italian baptistery. This innovative design set Braid Church apart from other churches of the time. In 1893, the interior was adorned with extensive marbling, further enhancing its Italianate theme. Sadly, only the marbled columns in the vestibule remain as a testament to this embellishment. Over the years, Braid Church has continued to evolve. The church halls and organ chamber were added in 1898 and 1911, respectively. These additions reflect the growing needs of the congregation. Take a moment to admire the red sandstone rubble and cream ashlar dressings. Notice the Venetian window with its egg and dart cornice, framed by elegant pilasters. The bell towers, each topped with a pyramidal stone roof, add a touch of grandeur. Braid Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the faith and dedication of a community.
