Ever wondered about a place where nuns once lived and now delicious treats are served? That’s Ca ses Monges. Today, we’ll uncover the story behind this special building. Ca ses Monges in Puerto Pollensa holds a history of dedication. It is more than just a café.

For a century, this building was home to the Sisters of Charity of Moll de Pollensa. They dedicated their lives to educating children, especially those less fortunate. Imagine the sounds of children learning echoing through these halls. These nuns taught and cared for the young ones.

The Sisters of Charity arrived in Vilafranca in 1890. By 1897, they had moved into a building donated by the Sureda family. This act of kindness established their presence. The first floor was blessed in 1900. Later, the chapel was designed by Marquis de Vivot and Joan M. Sureda in de Verí. It was inaugurated in 1921.

Look closely at the main entrance. Above the door, you’ll see a coat of arms. It represents Grandes de España, the noble elite of Spain. Notice the marquis crown and ermine fur. This symbolizes the marriage of Jon M. Sureda i de Verí and Bàrbara Fortuny i de Verí.

Adjacent to Ca ses Monges is the chapel. Though neo-Gothic in style, it has a Baroque entrance matching the main building. The chapel is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Inside, the chapel is divided into three sections by vaulted ceilings.

In the third section, you’ll find the choir. The altarpiece is in neo-Gothic style. In the center is an image of the Immaculate Conception. Images of Sant Joseph and Sant Vicenç de Paül are on the sides. Behind the altarpiece, there is a large stained glass window. It shows the Sureda-Fortuny coat of arms.

Ca ses Monges is more than just a building. It’s a place with a story. It carries a legacy of charity. Today, Ca ses Monges continues to serve the community. It offers local specialties. It embraces modernity while honoring tradition. You can find local products such as bread from “Pa Nord”. Also, try the Cardenal de Lloseta or ice cream from Sóller.

Now, as you enjoy the treats, remember the nuns. Think about their dedication to the children. Ca ses Monges stands as a symbol of Puerto Pollensa. It blends history, community, and delicious flavors.
