Within the walls of Dubrovnik’s ancient city stands the Chapel of Saint Rocco. Its ornate altar a masterpiece of artistry beckons you closer.

This isn’t just any chapel. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Dubrovnik. The Chapel of Saint Rocco holds a special place in the city’s heart. It’s located near the Cathedral on the main square.

In 1575 a skilled woodcarver Franjo Cucic from Blato on Korcula crafted a magnificent wooden altar. This altar featured polychromatic and gold-plated statues of Saint Rocco Kuzma and Damjan. A bust of Our Lady of Health crowns this impressive piece. These statues remain today. Their faces still convey a captivating stillness and life. They reflect the distinct features of the island’s people.

The altar wasn’t just replaced. It was enhanced. In 1767 a stunning marble staircase was added. This elevated the altar further enhancing its grandeur. The materials used are vibrant multicolored marbles. Today it’s the largest altar in the church.

More than just statues and marble the Chapel of Saint Rocco also boasts other treasures. A small altar dedicated to the Three Kings graces the southern wall. Above this sits a golden retable. The carving is in the Mannerist style. It dates back to the 17th century. A small icon of the Gift of the Kings is displayed within a silver frame.

The northern wall houses the classical altar of Our Lady of Karmen. Dating back to 1855 this altar is a sight to behold. It features three paintings from the previous altar. Carl Ridolfi from Venice painted them in 1642. They depict Our Lady of Karmen with Saint Peter. Saint Lawrence and Saint Stephan are depicted on the sides.

Notice the neo-Renaissance choir seats flanking the altar. Vicko Tironi from Brac created them in 1795. Their high hollow backrests are reminiscent of other Dalmatian choir benches from the Romanesque and Baroque periods.

The facade of the Chapel of Saint Rocco holds its own stories. Look closely at the reliefs. You’ll see the coat of arms and the Virgin Mary. These details speak volumes about the faith and history of Dubrovnik.
