Elected in 2024 who governs this area?
The Deuxième circonscription de l’Essonne a fascinating history. This area in the Essonne department elects one Member of Parliament to France’s National Assembly. It’s a large area covering the rural south and east.
For a long time Gaullist candidates won elections here. One exception was between 1981 and 1986. Boundary changes make comparing older results difficult. Interestingly in 1993 and 1997 the main conservative candidate faced the National Front not the left.
The Deuxième circonscription de l’Essonne includes 69 communes. These range in size from Étampes with 4092 hectares to the tiny Ormoy with only 188. In 2006 Étampes had 22568 inhabitants while Roinvilliers had just 74.
The area’s electoral history is dominated by the right. From 1988 to 2022 right-wing deputies Xavier Dugoin and later Franck Marlin represented the area. The closest election was in 1988. Xavier Dugoin won with just over 53% of the vote. Gérard Lefranc a Communist mayor of Étampes ran repeatedly without success.
Dugoin and Marlin won easily against National Front candidates Hubert de Mesmay in 1993 and 1997. In 1997 the left was extremely divided. Marlin had a close call in 2002 winning only in the second round. He won an outright majority in 2007. He also won in 2012 and 2017 but needed second rounds. In 2020 he resigned due to holding multiple offices. His replacement Bernard Bouley lost in 2022.
The 2022 election was a turning point. The right-wing candidate lost in the first round. The second round saw a National Rally candidate Nathalie Da Conceicao Carvalho against a NUPES candidate. Carvalho won with over 53% of the vote becoming one of two National Rally deputies from the Île-de-France region. The Deuxième circonscription de l’Essonne is now represented by her. Its political landscape continues to evolve.
