Doesn’t the name Lampton conjure images of fluffy lambs frolicking in green fields? Indeed, the name Lampton derives from the Old English for “lamb farm”. Welcome to Lampton a small area of Hounslow. It sits on the Great West Road, nestled between Hounslow town centre and Heston.

From the 18th century, Lampton was under the ownership of the Bulstrodes. They were the lords of the manor of Hounslow. In 1881, they envisioned grand housing along Lampton Road. Unfortunately, their plans were unsuccessful. Lampton remained a small agricultural hamlet until the late 19th century.

The extension of what we now know as the Piccadilly line significantly shaped Lampton. It spurred the area’s development. Soon, Lampton transformed from a quiet hamlet into a more built-up area.

Even though the grand housing plans never fully materialized, Lampton has left its mark. The area lends its name to Lampton School, Lampton Road, and the lovely Lampton Park.

Speaking of Lampton Park, it is located northwest of Hounslow Central tube station. It offers a blend of open spaces and formal gardens. You will find playing fields, tennis courts, and a children’s playground. Flower beds add splashes of color. A small pond provides a tranquil spot.

The park also features a memorial garden. For nature enthusiasts, there’s a nature area. It includes native woodlands and a wildflower meadow. Lampton Park officially opened in 1930 providing green space for the growing community.

An interesting artifact resides within Lampton Park. It is a Sarsen Stone. Unearthed in Heston in 1926, it was installed in the park in 1951. This ancient stone adds a touch of history to the park’s landscape.

Lampton Park played a role in local celebrations. It was one of the parks used for the Charter Celebrations in October 1932. This marked when the Urban District Council became a Borough Council.

Historically, Lampton was a village or hamlet in the Heston parish. Its inhabitants primarily depended on agriculture and brickmaking. As the 20th century dawned, terraced housing began to appear. Roads like Montague Road, Queen’s Road, and Balfour Road were laid out. The village slowly merged into Hounslow.

The Black Horse Inn has a long history in Lampton. Records indicate its presence as early as 1759. The inn was rebuilt in 1926, serving locals and visitors alike.

Today, Lampton is a vibrant part of Hounslow. It blends its historical roots with modern life. From its humble beginnings as a lamb farm, Lampton has evolved into a thriving London neighborhood.
