In 1924, a simple act of concern over children playing marbles on a Sunday led to the founding of David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. This wasn’t in the heart of Austin, but in the rural community of Ceiling Hills, south of the city near the Colorado River. David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church’s story began in a humble blacksmith shop. The church was initially named Davis Chapel, honoring the family on whose farm the first meetings were held. Twenty-eight souls made up the original congregation, led by Reverend L.M. Marshall. In 1926, seeking a larger space and greater reach, the congregation moved to Austin, settling in a tabernacle at 14th and Chestnut Streets. The name was changed to David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Over the next decades, David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church became a mother church, giving rise to other congregations like Rising Star, Mt. Calvary, and Zion Hill. The church continued to grow both spiritually and physically, requiring new buildings and larger spaces. By 1958, the congregation had outgrown its stucco building on 12th and Chestnut. The ambitious decision was made to purchase land and build a new sanctuary at 19th and Chestnut Streets (now Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard). In a testament to their resilience and community strength, the construction of this new David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church was an all-Black endeavor. Architect John S. Chase, the first African American to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with an architecture degree, designed the striking modernist building. Oliver B. Street served as the contractor, and financing came from the St. John Regular Baptist Association, as white banks refused to lend to the Black congregation. This achievement represented a powerful statement of self-reliance during the era of segregation. In 1959, the congregation proudly moved into their new home, a symbol of their faith and perseverance. Today, David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church continues its mission of service and community engagement. It stands as a powerful reminder of the humble beginnings and unwavering faith of those who sought a place of worship and fellowship over a game of marbles on a Sunday afternoon.
