Glimpse back to a time when Chilly-Mazarin was just a Roman villa named Cailliacum. Today we explore the story of Chilly-Mazarin. It is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris.

Chilly-Mazarin sits about 16.9 km from the very heart of Paris. A small part of Orly International Airport even lies within Chilly-Mazarin. The residents of this charming commune are known as Chiroquois.

Chilly-Mazarin’s story stretches back to Roman times. The area developed around that Roman villa Cailliacum. Over time Cailliacum evolved into Chailly. The name Mazarin came later.

In 1822 the suffix Mazarin was added. It distinguished it from other French villages named Chilly. This addition honored the Mazarinettes. They were the famed nieces of Cardinal Mazarin. These nieces lived at a mansion in Chilly for years. Hortense Mancini the fourth niece passed titles down to her son. He became the Marquess of Chilly and Duke of Mazarin. These titles were ultimately passed to Monaco’s House of Grimaldi.

Chilly-Mazarin offers a glimpse into Parisian suburban life. The town has seven preschools. They are du Centre du Château Les Roseaux Les Saules Pasteur and Pauline Kergomard. There are four elementary schools. They include du Château Jean-de-la-Fontaine Pasteur and Pierre et Marie Curie.

For older students Collège les Dînes Chiens opened in 1968. High schools in the area include Lycée Marguerite-Yourcenar in Morangis. Others are Lycée Jacques-Prévert and Lycée des Métiers Jean-Perrin both in Longjumeau.
