Picture this a grand hacienda a testament to centuries past. This is the Museo Hacienda de Santa Mónica. Its history stretches back to 1573 when Agustinian friars acquired the land. They purchased not only the land but also a house a mill and livestock. The friars named the estate Santa Mónica honoring St Augustine’s mother. They carved a stone emblem into the entrance a heart pierced by three arrows the Agustinian symbol. The year 1573 is also carved into this stone.

Santa Mónica quickly became a major producer of wheat supplying Mexico City. For years it thrived. Then in 1947 Antonio Haghenbeck y de la Lama purchased the hacienda. He was the last private owner. He had a vision. He wanted to transform this historical site into a museum. This vision gave birth to the Fundación Cultural Antonio Haghenbeck y de la Lama.

Years of restoration followed. Today the Museo Hacienda de Santa Mónica stands as a glorious example of colonial architecture. You can still see the old mill a vast hall with luxurious furnishings and fine paintings. Explore the opulent salons. Admire the intricate woodwork. Each room whispers tales of bygone eras.

A particular treasure is a bath said to have belonged to La Malinche. It’s a tiled tub adorned with Talavera tiles in a striking zigzag pattern. Upstairs more salons await including a 19th-century billiards room. Italian and Spanish writing desks dating back to the 17th century are inlaid with precious stones. The rooms also contain remarkable tapestries. Gorgeous chandeliers complete the picture. Portraits of former owners hang on the walls. Every object speaks of wealth and history.
