A legacy whispers from the River House. This isn’t just any building. This is one of only two traditional Chinese mansions left in Singapore. It stands proudly near the Singapore River a testament to history.

The River House boasts a fascinating past. Some believe Tan Yeok Nee a wealthy merchant built it. Archival records however tell a different story. One of the owners in the 1870s was Choa Moh Choon the headman of the Ghee Hok Society. This notorious group was known for illicit activities. This led to rumors that the River House was once a triad den.

But the River House’s story is more than just whispers of shady dealings. Its architecture speaks volumes. It showcases Teochew influences with a four-points of gold layout and fire alleys. These alleys acted as firebreaks saving the River House from a devastating blaze that consumed a neighbor in 1920.

The River House has changed hands many times. In 1993 it underwent a careful restoration. It received the Architecture Heritage Award in 1995. Today it’s a vibrant commercial space. A restaurant a bar and a nightclub occupy its rooms. Wedding couples even use it for photoshoots.

For nearly 150 years the River House has watched over the Singapore River. It has witnessed the changes and the growth of the city. It continues to adapt. It shows the enduring spirit of Singapore. Its walls retain secrets. They also share a rich history. The River House is more than a building. It’s a living piece of Singapore’s past. It’s a place where history and modernity meet. It’s a place you should explore.
