Opened in 1955, Niu Valley Middle School has quite a story to tell. Originally, Niu Valley Middle School was much smaller. It started with only six staff members and just seventh graders. Can you imagine? The school’s humble beginnings contrast sharply with the bustling campus you see today. Niu Valley Middle School is located in the tranquil Niu Valley neighborhood of East Honolulu. The school serves students from several surrounding areas, including Hawaii Kai, Kuli’ou’ou, Niu Valley, Wailupe Valley, and ‘Āina Haina. The Lancers, with their vibrant red and yellow school colors, call this place home.
Niu Valley Middle School has seen tremendous growth. The campus has expanded from a single building to fifteen. It now educates approximately 500 students each year. For many years, Niu Valley Middle School served 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. However, with the construction of Kaiser High School in 1974, the ninth graders moved on to high school. Niu Valley Middle School is deeply committed to academic excellence. The students, faculty, and staff work together. Their goal is to create a safe and supportive learning environment. This nurturing environment helps young minds grow and thrive. The school offers an outstanding curriculum and a wide range of student activities. These include grade-level teams, an advisee-advisor program, exploratory courses, and various sports and extracurricular activities. This comprehensive approach encourages the entire school community to work together. They strive to make a difference.
Niu Valley Middle School follows a modified school calendar. It aligns with the elementary schools in the Kaiser Complex. In 2001, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges granted the school a six-year accreditation, a testament to its commitment to quality education. The school’s vision is inspiring: “to instill, foster, and share the love and joy of learning.” Their mission is equally powerful. They aim to “teach and nurture early adolescents,” recognizing their unique needs as they transition from childhood to young adulthood. Niu Valley Middle School emphasizes creating a safe and healthy environment. They encourage respect and trust within the school community. They focus on developing self-respect and open communication. The school fosters collaboration and teamwork. They also strive to develop responsible citizens. Their curriculum equips students with the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.
The Friends of Niu Valley group provides essential parent and community support. They play an advisory role in the school’s improvement efforts. The School Community-Based Management (SCBM) council actively works towards school improvement, renewal, and educational reform, always keeping the school’s vision and mission at heart. At Niu Valley Middle School, the motto is simple yet profound: “Be the best that you can be.” This message resonates throughout the campus, encouraging students to reach their full potential.
