“The most costly, most elegant, best preserved, and most centrally located church designed by Warren H. Hayes within the city of Minneapolis.” That’s how the United Methodist Church is described in the historic register. This grand building, standing before you, has a story as impressive as its architecture. The United Methodist Church wasn’t always this magnificent structure. It began modestly in 1852 as Centenary Church, the first Methodist congregation west of the Mississippi. The church attracted prominent figures like Horatio Lillibridge, a name you might recognize from the Nabisco company. In a gesture of incredible generosity, Lillibridge gifted the land for this very building to the church in 1888. The architect Warren H. Hayes was tasked with bringing this vision to life. He designed a masterpiece, with a sweeping balcony, expansive stained glass dome, and even two-story tall doors that connected the nave to the chapel. Completed in 1892, the United Methodist Church quickly became a landmark. But the church’s story doesn’t end with bricks and mortar. During the Great Depression, it transformed into a beacon of hope for the community. Under the leadership of Dr. Mecklenburg, the church spearheaded “The Organized Unemployed, Incorporated.” This self-help organization provided crucial support to struggling families through a unique system of bartering and community service. The United Methodist Church has seen its share of challenges. Financial difficulties almost led to its demise, but the congregation rallied, even selling the Wesley Temple building to secure their future. Through it all, the church remained a pillar of strength, embodying its mission of service and inclusivity. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the legacy of the United Methodist Church. It’s not just a beautiful building, it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community.
