Have you ever imagined sleeping with kings? The Koshoji Kofun is not just any burial mound. It’s a keyhole-shaped time capsule. Here in Umi Fukuoka it silently guards secrets from the Kofun period. This is one of the largest keyhole-shaped tumuli in Kasuya District. It is estimated to have been built around the middle of the third century AD. Imagine the meticulous work required to create this monumental structure. The Koshoji Kofun’s keyhole shape is significant. It’s a testament to the power and status of its occupant. The tumulus is approximately 54 meters long. It has a circular rear portion and a rectangular front portion. This is a zenpo-koden-fun. It is oriented toward the west-northwest. The mound’s top is adorned with fukiishi stones. These carefully placed stones would have been meant to add a touch of elegance to the tomb. Archaeologists have found clues inside. They unearthed three box-style sarcophagi one wooden coffin and one earthenware coffin. Among the grave goods found were magatama beads cylindrical beads Haji ware pottery pots and iron swords. The largest sarcophagus was constructed using basalt possibly from Noko Island and talc from Mt. Wakasugi. The use of these exotic materials demonstrates the power and wealth of the individual buried here. The smaller sarcophagi used local stone. All three sarcophagi were lined with vermillion pigment a striking detail. Scholars believe the Koshoji Kofun is the tomb of a Fumikoku king. This kingdom existed on the Japanese archipelago in the 3rd century. This is according to the History of the Three Kingdoms and the History of the Northern Dynasties. The artifacts found in the Koshoji Kofun are now housed in the Umi Town Museum of History and Folklore. Today the surrounding area is a historical park. There’s even a one-fifth scale model in the Guidance Plaza. This helps visitors visualize the tumulus as it may have originally appeared. It’s a short 15-minute walk from Sue-Chuo Station. So soak in the history and the atmosphere. Remember that you are standing in front of a piece of ancient history a monument to a kingdom and a king. Koshoji Kofun is a silent guardian of ancient Japan’s past. It invites us to reflect on a time long gone. A time of kings and kingdoms. It is a captivating reminder of the enduring legacy of Fukuoka’s rich history.
