Hidden just footsteps from the Basilica, what awaits you inside Borkonyha Winekitchen is truly special. Borkonyha is not just a restaurant. It is a wine lover’s dream come true. This Michelin-starred gem pairs exceptional Hungarian cuisine with an extensive wine list. That list boasts over one hundred Hungarian and international labels.

Borkonyha Winekitchen opened its doors in December 2010. It sits on a pedestrianized street in Budapest’s center. The Danube River is only a short walk away. From the outside, Borkonyha may appear informal, like a bistro. But don’t be deceived. The food is outstanding. It is the result of a decade-long dream. Tamás Horváth and Zoltán Kalocsai are the owners. Their concept was a family-friendly restaurant, in French-style bistro. They wanted to offer the best of Hungarian cuisine.

Ákos Sárközi joined as chef when Borkonyha opened. He brought experience from the two-Michelin-star Vila Joya in Portugal. In 2014, Borkonyha Winekitchen won its own Michelin star. It has retained it ever since.

Inside Borkonyha, the atmosphere is relaxed and convivial. Appearances are deceptive. Fresh ingredients are of utmost importance. While inspired by Transylvanian cuisine, Chef Sárközi also uses ingredients from Spain, France, and Italy.

The menu at Borkonyha is concise. You can always rely on local favorites. Mangalica, a local variety of pork, is a must-try. Durbincs, a Danubian fish also known as Balon’s ruffe, is another excellent choice. Let your waiter guide you on wine pairings. After all, it’s called Wine Kitchen for a reason. The Hungarian cheeses are a popular way to end any visit.

The wine list is impressive. It features only Hungarian wines. The staff are helpful and friendly. Service is excellent at Borkonyha Winekitchen. Borkonyha offers a six-course degustation menu. Organic juice pairings are available. For a truly special experience, premium wine pairings are also available.

Borkonyha Winekitchen is a truly special place. It is perfect for those who appreciate the finer things in life. The ambiance is sophisticated. It’s relaxed. It is a Michelin-starred experience without the stiff atmosphere.
