Gazing at the Werfthalle III, imagine the bustling activity of Karlsruhe’s Rheinhafen in the early 20th century. This isn’t just another warehouse; it’s a testament to Karlsruhe’s industrial past and its significance as a trading hub. Completed in 1912, the Werfthalle III was strategically built to handle the increasing flow of goods, especially those subject to customs duties.

Werfthalle III stands as a robust structure crafted from red Pfinztal quarry stone. It measures 72 meters in length and 23 meters in width. The building has a basement, a ground floor, and two upper floors. This provides a substantial storage area of approximately 7,000 square meters. Predominantly, it was intended for customs goods.

The Werfthalle III’s design incorporates a Mansard gambrel roof. A similarly designed transverse structure closes off the eastern end. This 23-meter-long section originally housed the administration. Like Werfthalle I, a firewall divides the hall into western and eastern halves. The west has seven window axes. The east has eight. On the water and land sides, there are loading ramps. There are also two weighbridges on the south side.

Think about the goods passing through the Werfthalle III. These goods were vital to Karlsruhe’s economy. The hall facilitated trade and commerce. It boosted the city’s growth.

During World War II, the Werfthalle III faced destruction. While the administration section was destroyed, the storage hall remained functional. In 1950, reconstruction efforts formally integrated the transverse structure into the longitudinal building.

Interestingly, the Werfthalle III wasn’t alone in its purpose. Werfthalle I and II played similar roles in the Rheinhafen. Werfthalle I was built first. It was designed by August Stürzenacker under Wilhelm Strieder’s leadership. Werfthalle II followed, expanding storage capacity.

However, Werfthalle I and II suffered greater damage during the war. Werfthalle I was rebuilt in a modified form. Werfthalle II was replaced with a new hall building.

Since 2000, Werfthalle III, Werfthalle I, and the Getreidelagerhaus form a protected historical ensemble. These buildings stand as vital reminders of Karlsruhe’s industrial heritage. They illustrate the city’s evolution.

Consider the architectural details. The red Pfinztal quarry stone gives the Werfthalle III its distinctive character. The Mansard roof adds to its aesthetic appeal. These details reflect the architectural styles prevalent during its construction.

Today, the Werfthalle III is operated by Rhenus Port Logistics. It continues to play a role in Karlsruhe’s port activities. Its historical significance is now protected.

As you stand here, remember the hands that built and operated this hall. Remember the goods that passed through its doors. The Werfthalle III is a symbol of Karlsruhe’s past. It is a reminder of the city’s enduring spirit.
