Here stands the Szeplőtelen Szűz Mária-kápolna a testament to faith. It is a serene beacon nestled in Budapest. This chapel has a unique story that intertwines with divine visions. It connects to a man’s unwavering devotion.

The Szeplőtelen Szűz Mária-kápolna history began with Wendler Ferenc. He was a man who lived from 1815 to 1897. Wendler experienced a life-altering event in 1853. He survived a mining accident. Wendler attributed his survival to the Virgin Mary’s intervention.

Following this miraculous escape Wendler had dreams. In his dreams the Virgin Mary appeared. She proclaimed I am the Immaculate Conception. These visions inspired Wendler. He vowed to honor the Virgin Mary. Wendler decided to build a chapel. It would be a testament to his gratitude. It would also serve as a reminder of her grace.

In the spring of 1855 Wendler started his work. Family and friends joined him. Together they prepared a path to Kő-hegy. Wendler then sought permission. He wanted to construct the chapel. Scitovszky János the Prince Primate of Esztergom granted it. The foundation stone was laid on May 5 1855. Brunner János a parish priest officiated. The Szeplőtelen Szűz Mária-kápolna was consecrated on October 15 1855. It was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

After his wife’s death Wendler dedicated his life. He would care for the chapel. Wendler carved a cave into the rock near the chapel in 1878. He moved into this cave. He wanted to be close to the sacred site. Wendler lived there until his death on February 21 1897. He was buried behind the Szeplőtelen Szűz Mária-kápolna.

Wendler’s son and grandson continued his work. They took care of the chapel. His grandson Grósz Mátyás lived as a hermit in the cave. Over the years the chapel’s dedication became a local festival. Pilgrims traveled to attend.

The Szeplőtelen Szűz Mária-kápolna suffered damage. It was hit multiple times during 1944 and 1945. After the deportations that started in 1946 its stones were carried away. The idea to rebuild the chapel emerged in 1996. The statue of Mary was saved from the war. It was returned to Budaörs in 1997.

The foundation stone was relaid on May 5 2003. With the Budaörs residents working together the chapel was rebuilt in months. It was reconsecrated on October 15 2003. In September 2004 the chapel’s bells were consecrated. The Holy Trinity statue was placed next to it. In 2006 steps leading to the chapel were built. In September 2008 the Stone Corpus was replaced. It was recreated by sculptor Seregi József.

Today the Szeplőtelen Szűz Mária-kápolna stands as a symbol. It represents faith resilience and community. Its story echoes. It speaks of visions devotion and the enduring power of belief. The Szeplőtelen Szűz Mária-kápolna invites all. Come reflect on faith history and the strength of the human spirit.
