Glancing at the stream of Rio Cabeça, it whispers tales of old. Rio Cabeça got its name from a small chapel. The chapel was dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Cabeça. That translates to Our Lady of the Head. It was built between 1603 and 1607. This chapel stood in the old Engenho d’El Rey. Today, that area is the Jardim Botânico neighborhood.

Rio Cabeça is located in Tijuca National Park. The park itself is divided into three sections. These are Forest, Serra da Carioca, and Pedra Bonita/Pedra da Gávea. The park offers activities for everyone. You can enjoy picnics and barbecues there. If you are more adventurous, you can try hang gliding and climbing. Many trails also await exploration.

This area is home to some of Brazil’s most famous landmarks. Corcovado Mountain is one of them. Here stands the statue of Cristo Redentor. It is one of the new seven wonders of the world. You can see Pedra da Gávea and Vista Chinesa. Lage Park, Paineiras, and Dona Marta Viewpoint are other notable spots. Horto Waterfalls and the Transcarioca Trail are also worth visiting.

In the 19th century, the valley of Rio Cabeça was very popular. City residents often visited. Now it is a landmark on the Transcarioca Trail. The trail cuts through the Serra da Carioca Sector of Tijuca National Park. Because Rio Cabeça is so old, you can see more than just nature. Besides waterfalls and wells, there are traces of old sidewalks. You might even spot remains of old buildings.

If you are interested in visiting, Rio Cabeça is open daily. You can visit from 8 am to 5 pm. A daily rate applies to use this location.

Rio Cabeça offers a unique blend of history and nature. It’s a place where you can connect with the past. You can also enjoy the beauty of the present. As you explore, imagine the people who walked these paths before. They sought peace and recreation in this very valley. The Rio Cabeça continues to flow.
