Construction of the Shanghai Caojing Thermal Power Plant began in August 2006. It was commissioned to support Expo 2010 Shanghai China. The plant boasts an installed capacity of 2000 MW. This power is generated by two 1000 MW units. These units are fueled by coal. A towering 210-meter chimney marks its presence on the landscape.
The Shanghai Caojing Thermal Power Plant is operated by State Power Investment Corporation and Shanghai Electric. It represents a significant achievement in thermal power technology. The plant earned the Gold Award for National Quality Engineering in 2011. It was also recognized as a classic project for the 30th anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening Up.
Notably, the clean emission project of Unit 2 was identified by the National Energy Administration as one of the 13 demonstration projects for environmental protection rehabilitation on coal-fired units. It began operations in February 2015. This highlights the ongoing efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of coal-fired power generation.
Shanghai Electric Power, a subsidiary of State Power Investment Corporation, owns 100% of the Shanghai Caojing Thermal Power Plant. Shanghai Electric Power generates electricity from various sources including coal, gas, wind, and solar.
The plant uses steam turbines with a Cogen system for baseload power. Shanghai Turbine supplied the N1000-26.25/600/600 model turbines and THDF125/67 electric generators. Shanghai Boiler Works provided the steam boilers.
In August 2023, Phase II of the Shanghai Caojing Power Station was approved. This expansion includes two additional 1000 MW units. These units will utilize ultra-supercritical technology.
