How about stepping back in time to 1933? That’s when the story of Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Correia in Rio de Janeiro began. This church, a beacon of faith in the Engenho Novo neighborhood, is celebrating a rich 90-year history.
Founded on July 13, 1933, Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Correia’s story is entwined with the arrival of Augustinian friars from Spain. Between 1929 and 1933, these friars of the Matritense Province of the Sacred Heart of Jesus helped shape the church.
Initially, the community gathered at the Capela São João on Morro São João. Frei Agostinho Fincias, OSA, was the first pastor. As the congregation grew, a new location became necessary for Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Correia.
The church moved to Rua Condessa Belmonte for a while. Later, a more spacious plot was found on Rua Barão do Bom Retiro. Here, the community built a proper church and parish facilities.
Over time, the community decided to construct a grander church on the same land. The construction was a true community endeavor. The new church became a central place for meeting, celebrating, praying, and living the Christian faith.
Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Correia has always been deeply involved in social work. To support these efforts, the Armazém de Ideias e Ações Comunitárias (Aiacom) project was built in 1992. It supports disadvantaged children in the community.
Today, Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Correia includes the main church. Also, it encompasses the communities of São João, Nossa Senhora Aparecida, and Santo Agostinho.
The church supports the Vicentinos da Consolação group. This support is through the Campanha Domingo da Caridade, which distributes food monthly.
The facade features a central tower. It is topped with an abstract steel pyramid. This pyramid supports an element blending a sacred cross with the four cardinal points. The design is simple. It highlights the giant main doorway.
The parish’s history significantly influenced Engenho Novo’s development. The founding of Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Correia led to a sub-neighborhood known as Consolação.
