Founded in 1969 Burnside Community Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Located in Chicago’s Burnside neighborhood it’s more than just a building. It’s a cornerstone. It’s a place where a vision took root. Mother Cordella Wesley envisioned a new church. She wanted a church dedicated to uplifting the community. This vision spurred a meeting in June 1969. Sixteen people gathered at Tuley Park Fieldhouse. They discussed a new church. A new beginning.
From that small gathering Burnside Community Baptist Church was born. The name itself reflects its commitment to the neighborhood. It chose the Baptist name to honor previous affiliations. Reverend Florezel Louis Porter Jr. was elected as the first pastor. He was a driving force. He led the church and the community. He was president of the Chesterfield Community Council. He was president of Burnside Scholastic Academy. He even managed five boys’ baseball teams. The church became a hub for the community. Services were initially held in a member’s basement. The church motto “Where The People Have a Mind to Work” perfectly encapsulates the spirit of its founders. It’s a place of action a place of faith. A place of service.
In 1972 the church purchased its current building. This building a symbol of stability marked a major milestone. It provided a permanent home for the growing congregation. The church’s commitment to community outreach is impressive. They helped over 100 families during the pandemic. This is a testament to their dedication. They actively support their neighbors. They demonstrate tangible care.
Tragedy struck in 2003. Reverend Porter passed away. However the church persevered. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit a new leader emerged. Reverend Albert Moses Shears was elected pastor in 2006. He continued the tradition of service. He expanded ministries to include Prayer in the Park. He’s ensured that the church continues to flourish. Burnside Community Baptist Church stands as a beacon of hope. It’s a place of worship a place of support and a place of community.
