Ever wondered where Denmark’s largest dental clinic resides? That would be within the walls of KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet. This massive complex is a vital part of the University of Copenhagen. It houses the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet is named after Danish physiologist Peter Ludvig Panum. He lived from 1820 to 1885. The KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet includes the Dental School and the Faculty of Medicine. Also it includes The School of Oral Health Care and The School for Dental Technicians.

Construction of the KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet took place from 1971 to 1986. The architects were Eva and Nils Koppel. Other contributing architects were Gert Edstrand and Poul Erik Thyrring. The building’s design reflects Brutalism. Landscape architects Edith and Ole Nørgård designed the outside areas. Tonning Rasmussen envisioned the artistic decoration. He also designed the color scheme and the building’s characteristic chimneys. You can find murals by Poul Gernes in parts of the basement.

The KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet complex first opened in 1975. The School of Oral Health Care moved to KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet in 1986. The KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet provides many facilities. These include a library and two canteens. There are also lecture theaters, offices, and student clubs. A bookshop is also located here. The dental clinic within the KU Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet – Panum Instituttet is the largest in Denmark. It features approximately 230 treatment chairs.

In 2012 construction started on an extension named the Maersk Tower. The tower was inaugurated on January 18, 2017. With this addition the Panum complex grew significantly. It went from 105000 square meters to 140000 square meters. The new space is dedicated to research and educational activities. There is also a canteen and bicycle parking. The public can access an observation platform on the top floor.
