The center officially changed its name in 2008. It became the Helmholtz Zentrum München German Research Center for Environmental Health. This reflects its evolving research priorities.

The Helmholtz Pioneer Campus was established in the same year. It connects biomedicine and engineering. It helps translate research into patient care. A building for this campus opened in 2023. Research in bioinformatics and computational biology has grown since the 1990s. This includes a focus on AI applications in biomedicine. Bio and biomedical engineering complement this work.

Helmholtz Munich has had its current structure since 2021. This structure is organized into departments called Centers. In the same year the center adopted the name Helmholtz Munich.
