Did you ever hear of a church born from the ashes of a civil war? In 1871, as the United States pieced itself back together, a resilient group of 17 settlers in Johnson Station, Texas, laid the foundation for the Arlington Baptist Church. This was a frontier land, where survival was a daily challenge. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, these pioneers yearned for spiritual grounding. They joined with their first pastor, Elder John Burnett, to establish the first Baptist church in the area. This small congregation marked the beginning of a legacy of faith in Arlington, a legacy now embodied by the Arlington Baptist Church you stand before. The year 1876 saw a pivotal moment for both the church and the town. The Texas and Pacific Railway established a stop midway between Dallas and Fort Worth, right in present-day Arlington. The town that sprung up around this railway stop was initially called “Hayterville”. The Johnson Station Baptist Church moved three miles north along with the community. The church became known as First Baptist Church of Arlington, adapting to its new surroundings. In 1877, “Hayterville” was renamed “Arlington”. This simple name change mirrored the evolving identity of the church and its congregation as they continued to grow and adapt alongside their community. Arlington Baptist Church’s journey is intertwined with the story of Arlington itself. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community in the face of change.
