Was it divine intervention or sheer determination that built the Iglesia Católica Santo Cura de Ars – Quito? Here in the Colinas del Norte neighborhood of Quito, this church stands as a testament to the power of community spirit. The Iglesia Católica Santo Cura de Ars – Quito’s story begins in the late 1990s. A priest named Father Patricio began the arduous task of constructing the church. The project gained momentum in 2003. Residents of the Rancho Bajo sector, specifically the “El Manantial” area, petitioned Archbishop Antonio Gonzales Sumarraga for their own parish. Their request was granted. Father Jorge Basquez was appointed as the parish priest under the initial name of “Santa Narcisa de Jesús.” Father Basquez later changed the name to “Santo Cura de Ars,” the name it retains today. However, due to historical, cultural, and religious reasons, the community also refers to it as “San Juan María Vianney.” The construction itself was a remarkable feat of community collaboration. Father Patricio Manquentay, together with the local people, organized mingas, a traditional form of communal work. Through these collective efforts, the Iglesia Católica Santo Cura de Ars – Quito rose, brick by brick, embodying the unity of its people. Since its construction, the church has nurtured three community groups: “Santa Narcisa de Jesús,” “Santo Cura de Ars,” and “Señor de los Milagros.” These groups cater to diverse age groups, from children and youths to the elderly. They receive support from Franciscan missionary sisters and youth groups like Juan XXIII, Young People for Christ, Caritas, and catechists. The church’s impact extends beyond spiritual guidance. It has fostered community development through initiatives like a kindergarten and a sewing workshop. It also provides catechism courses, demonstrating the transformative potential of collective action. The Iglesia Católica Santo Cura de Ars – Quito serves the neighborhoods of El Manantial, Rancho Bajo, Colinas del Norte, Prados del Condado, and Caminos a la Libertad. Their vision is to extend their pastoral work to even more neighborhoods and establish more pastoral groups. They aim to create a pastoral and economic council to further contribute to the community’s growth. The church is also a hub for cultural and religious festivities. The Jubileo de las 40 horas in November, the Christmas novena in December, the celebration of the Santo Cura de Ars in August, and the Señor de los Milagros in September. These events are open to all, offering a vibrant glimpse into the heart of Colinas del Norte. The Iglesia Católica Santo Cura de Ars – Quito is more than just a building. It’s a living embodiment of faith, resilience, and the unifying power of community.
