“Did the volcanic landscape of Fuerteventura always look like this?” a young boy once asked his grandfather, pointing towards the Horno de Cal Los Estancos. His grandfather chuckled. “Not quite, mijo. This land holds secrets of fire, not from volcanoes, but from man-made mountains like this one.” The Horno de Cal Los Estancos stands as a testament to Fuerteventura’s industrious past. This lime kiln, and others like it, played a vital role in the island’s economy for centuries. These weren’t just ovens; they were economic engines, churning out the finest lime in the Canary Islands. From the 16th century until the mid-20th century, the rhythmic roar of these kilns echoed across the island. Imagine, tons of lime, the product of intense heat and laborious work, making its way from Fuerteventura to other islands, even as far as Madeira and the Iberian Peninsula. The Horno de Cal Los Estancos tells a story of ingenuity and hard work. The process began with the extraction of caliche, a calcium carbonate-rich crust. Workers toiled under the sun, using pickaxes, wedges, and hammers to break the caliche into manageable pieces. These stones, weighing no more than 10 kg, were then loaded onto donkeys and camels for their journey to the kiln. The loading process was a meticulous dance. Layers of caliche were interspersed with layers of fuel, often anthracite coal imported from the United Kingdom. At times of scarcity, local wood or even gorse had to suffice. The bottom of the kiln was carefully filled with dry gorse, ready for ignition. Once lit, the kiln transformed into a fiery crucible, the caliche slowly converting into quicklime. The process was lengthy. It could take days, sometimes even a week, for the smoke to finally turn white, signaling the completion of the burn. The quicklime was then extracted from the lower opening, a grid facilitating its removal. Adding water transformed the quicklime into slaked lime, ready for transport in wooden boats. The Horno de Cal Los Estancos whispers tales of a bygone era, a time when the island’s heartbeat was synchronized with the rhythm of these lime kilns.
