The cornerstone rests here. This unassuming stone marks the beginning of a remarkable story a story of faith resilience and community. This is the Szemerle-telepi Plébánia in Budapest.
Before us stands the Szemerle-telepi Szent István Király Plébánia. Its construction began in 1937 under the direction of Prelate Béla Vereczkey. Completed in 1938 it was a beacon of hope for the rapidly growing Szemeretelep neighborhood. This area saw swift population growth in the 1920s. By 1935 it even had its own elementary school. Masses were initially held by priests from Pestszentlőrinc.
The Szemeretelep community wasn’t just built of bricks and mortar though. It was forged in the fires of faith. The Salesians of Don Bosco a religious order played a vital role in the early years of the parish. For a decade from 1939 to 1950 three or four Salesians served as pastors. Their dedication shaped the spiritual life of the community.
A pivotal figure in the Szemerle-telepi Plébánia’s history is János Pásztor. He assumed leadership in September 1944 during the tumultuous war years. In 1946 he became the first parish priest of this newly established church.
Under Pásztor’s leadership the parish constructed an impressive cultural center in 1946-47. It was built on land gifted by the city near the church. The suppression of religious orders in Hungary briefly disrupted this progress. Pásztor remained parish priest until 1953. Then he was removed due to pressure from the communist authorities. After that diocesan priests managed the parish until 1989.
The current church building however isn’t the original structure. Under the leadership of parish priest Péter Madari the current modern building was constructed. Funding came from community donations and the sale of a family home.
The Szemere-telepi Plébánia continues to thrive today. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of its community. A community that faced immense challenges yet persevered. It reminds us that faith can flourish even in the harshest environments. The Szemerle-telepi Plébánia’s story is a testament to the power of faith community and perseverance.
