Journey back to 1920. Picture a simple attap hut nestled in the heart of Sungei Tengah village. This humble structure was the original Chua Chu Kang Tao Bu Keng Temple. It was the beginning of a remarkable story.
The Chua Chu Kang Combined Temple as we see it today has deep roots. Mr Cai En a resident of Sungei Tengah village journeyed to Penang. His purpose was to invite the incense for the Nine Emperor Gods. There was no such temple in the village then. The incense was temporarily housed in Hougang. Later with the help of Mr Wang Ke Wei the Tao Bu Keng was built. It was dedicated to the Nine Emperor Gods.
The temple’s early years were marked by simple beginnings. It started as a humble attap hut. It was later rebuilt into a more substantial zinc and tile structure. Its isolated location made it hard for devotees to visit. In 1945 the temple was moved. Its new location was closer to the river and had better access. The area was known as Wai Dong Cheng. Other temples joined Tao Bu Keng forming a row of five.
The growth of Singapore changed the landscape around Chua Chu Kang Tao Bu Keng Temple. In 1992 the government acquired the land. The temple and others had to relocate. Only the Shui Gou Guan temple moved with the Chua Chu Kang Tao Bu Keng Temple. In 1996 a momentous event occurred. The two temples merged with four others. They formed the Chua Chu Kang Combined Temple. The Tao Bu Keng Temple’s journey was far from over.
