“They say these walls whisper secrets” I began my tour of the felhagyott víztározó.

This isn’t just any abandoned reservoir. It’s the Gellért Hill reservoir a silent giant carved into the mountainside. Built between 1972 and 1980 it stands as a testament to Budapest’s ingenuity. This wasn’t an easy feat. Imagine the sheer scale of the project 140000 cubic meters of earth excavated to create the space.

The reservoir is a marvel of engineering. Two vast basins each covering 5000 square meters. They designed the chambers with a unique piano shape. This clever design prevents the formation of stagnant water ensuring the water remains fresh and pure. It’s a perfect example of how form follows function a lesson in both aesthetics and practicality.

The concrete itself is a story. A 30-centimeter thick bottom slab poured continuously for 41 hours. Twenty-five mixer trucks worked tirelessly without interruption. The engineers added special additives. This enhanced the concrete’s compactness and waterproofing properties. It was crucial given the reservoir’s location within the mountain.

Dr József Janzó’s design was groundbreaking. At the time only Munich had attempted something similar. The reservoir’s functionality has stood the test of time. József Gruber’s fluid dynamics calculations ensured efficient water circulation. His simulations predicted the flow patterns perfectly a prediction confirmed decades later by computer models.

The reservoir played a crucial role in Budapest’s water supply. Its construction was spurred by a period of severe water shortages in the early 1970s. The city’s water system was struggling to meet the demands of a growing population and industry. The Gellért Hill reservoir provided much-needed relief. This highlights the critical importance of such infrastructure.

Today the felhagyott víztározó stands as a monument to human ingenuity. It’s a reminder of Budapest’s history and its ongoing dedication to providing essential services. Although abandoned it continues to intrigue and inspire awe. It tells a story of planning innovation and the constant effort to provide for the city’s needs. Now let’s move on to the next stop.
