Who would have thought that a humble carriage maker’s grave would stand as a testament to the rich history of Calvary Cemetery? Right here, in the heart of Dallas, Calvary Cemetery whispers stories of early settlers and their unwavering faith. Established in 1878, this hallowed ground became the final resting place for a wave of Catholic immigrants, mainly from countries like France, Ireland, Italy, and Germany. The cemetery houses a unique section called the “Religious Circle.” Within this circle lie the remains of dedicated clergy members of the Dallas Diocese. One such soul is Father Jeffrey Aloysius Hartnett, whose story embodies courage and compassion. In 1899, a smallpox epidemic gripped Dallas. Father Hartnett, without hesitation, walked into the “pest house,” a smallpox quarantine hospital, to offer comfort and last rites to the afflicted. Tragically, he contracted smallpox during his selfless acts and passed away soon after. Calvary Cemetery isn’t just a collection of tombstones. It’s a poignant tapestry woven with threads of sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring power of faith. The stories etched in stone remind us of the diverse souls who contributed to the vibrant city Dallas is today.
