Remember Manuel Rosé. This school bears his name. Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé is more than just a school. It is a monument to art education and community spirit.

Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé began as a dream in 1937. Citizens of Las Piedras wanted a school for their youth. The Sociedad de Fomento de Las Piedras led the charge. They started the school in Don Pilar Cabrera’s house. This house is now the Casa de la Juventud.

The current building of Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé was designed in 1946. José Scheps and Agustín Carlevaro were the architects. They worked for the Ministry of Public Works. Their design combined bricks and plaster. It used light and shadow to create a unique look.

In the 1960s, art transformed Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé. Professor Dumas Oroño invited artists from the Taller Torres García. They created murals vitrales and sculptures. These artworks integrated with the building. It became a fusion of art and architecture.

Dumas Oroño Augusto Torres and Francisco Matto were among the artists. Manuel Pailós Germán Cabrera and Juan Mancebo also contributed. Ernesto Vila and Luis Matromatteo added their talents. Their works turned the school into an art gallery.

The parents association APAL and director José Oreggioni supported the project. They created an environment for artistic expression. This made Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé unique in Uruguay.

The school’s art collection grew over time. Donations added paintings by Alceu Ribeiro and Manuel Lima. Jonio Montiel and Luis Alberto Solari were also featured. José Gurvich and Daniel de los Santos added to the collection. Daniel Gallo Juan Merino and Raúl Rijo’s works joined the others. Juan Mastromatteo Ruben Serralde and Joaquín Aroztegui’s art was included. Pablo Benavídez Carlos Llanos and Juan Antonio Cavo’s pieces were added. Jacinto Dos Santos Rosa Blanca Fourmet Manuel Rosé Miguel Angel Pareja and Joaquín Torres García are all represented.

Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé was named after Manuel Rosé. He was a painter from Las Piedras born in 1882. He died in 1961. His daughter Martha Rosé donated one of his paintings to the school. This honored his legacy.

In 2005 Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé gained recognition. It was declared a National Historical Monument. This protected the building and its artwork. The murals vitrales and sculptures were included in the declaration.

Today Liceo 1 Manuel Rosé stands as a symbol. It represents community art and education. The building’s architecture and art tell a story. It is a story of vision creativity and collaboration.
