This small square, nestled between the Jardin Toussaint-Louverture and Rue des Amandiers, resonates with the soul of an opera. Place Carmen, you see, is no ordinary square. It draws its name from the fiery Carmen of Bizet’s famous opera. And why this particular opera? Because the Conservatoire Municipal Georges Bizet, a renowned music school, calls this corner of the 20th arrondissement home. Before the 2010s, this space was just a forgotten section of Rue des Cendriers. But just as Carmen herself transformed from a simple cigarette girl into a captivating icon, this little stretch of road underwent a metamorphosis of its own. The transformation was sparked by the grand redesign of the ZAC des Amandiers. This urban renewal project saw the birth of the Jardin Toussaint-Louverture and cleaved Rue des Cendriers in two. The section connecting the garden to Rue des Amandiers was reborn as Place Carmen, a name that sings of passion, drama, and perhaps, a touch of tragedy, much like the opera that inspired it.
