“Three borders met here.” That’s the legacy of the area surrounding what we now call Újlaki-hegy.

Hello everyone. Today we are exploring Újlaki-hegy. It is a 449-meter-high peak in Budapest. More precisely it’s in the II. district. This area forms the northeastern part of the Buda Hills.

Újlaki-hegy stands as a western foreland. Its main peak rises to 495 meters. You will find Újlaki-hegy near Hármashatár-hegy.

Geologically Újlaki-hegy shares similarities with Hármashatár-hegy. Its base consists mainly of Upper Triassic dolomite. Over time nummulitic limestone and Budai marl settled on it.

Interestingly Újlaki-hegy is one of the least frequented peaks. It has largely avoided development. This makes it a unique natural space.

The peak rises west of the Hármashatár-hegy peak. The boundary line between Kővár and Szépvölgy divides its block. To the west fairly steep slopes descend. They face Pesthidegkút and the Hármashatár-hegyi airfield.

This slope makes Újlaki-hegy a popular spot. Hang gliders often launch from here. To the south the slopes run down. They extend toward Határnyereg. This area marks the western end of the Felső-Szép-völgyi-medence. To the north Vihar-hegy is the closest neighbor.

Reaching Újlaki-hegy via public transport requires a walk. The easiest route starts from Szépvölgyi road. This path involves the least elevation gain. The number 65 bus from Kolosy Square can get you close. At certain times it stops at Szépvölgyi dűlő. From there it’s about a 15-minute uphill walk.

At other times the 65 bus ends at Fenyőgyöngye Vendéglő. From that point it’s a 30 to 40-minute hike to reach Újlaki-hegy.

Dr. Márton Pécsi described Újlaki-hegy in detail. He wrote about the natural geography of Budapest.

Újlaki-hegy offers a peaceful escape. It allows one to immerse themselves in nature. Despite its central location it remains relatively untouched. It offers a glimpse into the geological history of the Buda Hills. It is a place where the past and present merge.
