A haven for science fiction lovers. That’s the İBB Özgen Berkol Doğan Library. It stands as a testament to a life cut short. Özgen Berkol Doğan a young physicist tragically lost in a plane crash in 2007. Her parents established this library in her memory in December 2012.
The İBB Özgen Berkol Doğan Library isn’t just a repository of books. It’s a vibrant cultural center. A place where science fiction fantasy and horror mingle with science and culture. It began in a small room. A spare room in the Istanbul Erkek Lisesi alumni association building. Soon the collection outgrew that space. The library moved to a new location in Kadıköy. Finding a suitable space proved challenging. It was even harder than obtaining permission for a library. Offices and clinics didn’t require such extensive permissions.
Eventually the library found its current home. This beautiful building initially proved difficult to reach. It belonged to Martin Bachmann an architect and archaeologist. He was the vice-president of the German Archaeological Institute in Istanbul. He had worked on the Bergama excavations. After his passing his family helped the Doğan family acquire the building.
The library houses a treasure trove of books. The collection boasts over 10000 items. It includes science fiction fantasy horror and even literature from many languages. There are also rare and signed first editions. The library even aims to collect all editions of the Harry Potter series in various languages.
The İBB Özgen Berkol Doğan Library isn’t just about books. It offers a range of events. There are lectures film screenings and discussions. These events cover science literature and Özgen’s hobbies. These include dance photography and art. The events attract a diverse crowd. This library truly lives up to its mission. It facilitates cultural exchange between generations.
In 2022 the İBB Özgen Berkol Doğan Library became part of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. It remains an independent entity. It continues to offer its unique blend of books and events. The library represents a lasting legacy. A tribute to a talented young woman’s life and passions. It’s a place where stories come alive. It is a testament to the enduring power of memory and community.
