This gigantic bowler hat didn’t start out in Dallas. It was actually commissioned by Timothy Oulton a British furniture brand. Artist Keith Turman designed it as a larger-than-life version of their logo. Originally intended for their Dallas store the hat’s journey took an unexpected turn. The store closed. The hat however found a new home in the Cedars neighborhood.
The sculpture is a real head-turner. Made of steel wood fiberglass epoxy and foam it’s a testament to Turman’s skill and creativity. The creation process wasn’t easy though. The brim presented a considerable challenge requiring special techniques and materials. The team even used a 3D scanner to get the proportions just right. They spent months working on this project overcoming numerous obstacles along the way.
The hat’s move to its current location wasn’t smooth sailing either. Initially meant for a spot above the store it faced permit issues. It sat in a warehouse for a while before finding its final resting place. Now it stands proudly. It’s a beloved landmark. It’s become a symbol of the area’s artistic spirit and quirky charm.
