Journey with me back to the 17th century. The once-powerful Sultanate of Banten found itself under siege by the Dutch East India Company. Desperate to defend their territory, the Sultan dispatched three trusted military leaders to establish a defensive settlement near the border of Batavia. These leaders, known as Tumenggungs, chose a strategic location for their new village: Cijantra. Cijantra became their stronghold, a place where they could rally their forces and resist the encroaching Dutch influence. The three Tumenggungs, Aria Yudhanegara, Aria Wangsakara, and Aria Jaya Santika, governed Cijantra together. The name “Tigaraksa,” meaning “three pillars,” was given to the surrounding area to honor their leadership. This name reflects the vital role these three leaders played in shaping the early history of Cijantra and the Tangerang region. Sadly, the reign of the Tumenggungs in Cijantra came to an end in 1684. A treaty signed between the Dutch and the Sultanate of Banten forced the entire Tangerang region, including Cijantra, under Dutch control. This marked a significant turning point in the history of Cijantra. From a symbol of resistance, it became a part of the colonial administration. This historical context adds a layer of complexity to Cijantra, demonstrating its resilience and adaptation throughout different periods of Indonesian history. Today, Cijantra is a village within the Pagedangan district of Tangerang Regency, Banten province. Its postal code is 15854. Despite the changes over the centuries, Cijantra remains a testament to the struggles and resilience of the people who have called it home.
