Once a muddy eyesore, now a serene escape. Welcome to Route du Lac de Saint-Mandé. This path skirts one of the four lakes in the Bois de Vincennes. But this lake is unique. The Route du Lac de Saint-Mandé borders the only lake formed from a natural water source.

Let’s step back in time. During the Middle Ages, the original pond served as a fish farm. Later, it became a muddy eyesore. By the 18th century, it was so bad, that it was filled.

But fast forward to the 1860s. Napoleon III transformed the Bois de Vincennes into a public park. As part of this project, the current Lac de Saint-Mandé was created. The Route du Lac de Saint-Mandé offers a pleasant way to explore this beautiful place.

The lake itself covers 1.5 hectares. It is a haven for wildlife. An island in the center is a bird sanctuary. Ducks, swans, and Canada geese all call it home. Amazingly, in 1966, scientists discovered a new type of plankton here. This discovery added to the lake’s biological significance.

As you stroll along the Route du Lac de Saint-Mandé, notice the Chalet du Lac. It was once Napoleon III’s hunting lodge. In 1904, it transformed into a lively guinguette, a dance hall. Today, it still offers food and entertainment.

Just steps from the lake, you will find other attractions. There is a Guignol puppet theater. Carousels twirl with laughter. A pétanque court invites friendly competition. These attractions make the Route du Lac de Saint-Mandé a popular family destination.

The path around the lake is just 0.7 kilometers long. A leisurely walk takes only 10 to 15 minutes. The Route du Lac de Saint-Mandé is perfect for strollers, joggers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape.

Look closely at the charming house near the lake. Built for guards during Napoleon III’s reign, it once watched over the area. See the arms of Paris on its facade. The Latin motto “Fluctuat nec mergitur” is displayed. It means “It is tossed by the waves but does not sink.” This motto reflects Paris’s resilience throughout history.

Interestingly, the lake even appears on the coat of arms of Saint-Mandé. It is represented by three wavy silver lines.

The Route du Lac de Saint-Mandé provides access to a place of beauty and tranquility. Despite being open year-round, the island remains off-limits. This protects the birds. Here, nature thrives in the heart of the city. This route offers everyone a chance to reconnect with nature.
