Ghosts of Dissenters whisper secrets. Welcome to Bunhill Fields Meeting House. This isn’t just any meeting house. It stands on hallowed ground. A ground steeped in history rebellion and faith.

Bunhill Fields Meeting House has a long and fascinating story. It began in 1661. London Quakers bought the land as a burial ground. It was a refuge a place for those outside the established church. Heretics and nonconformists found peace within its boundaries.

For centuries Bunhill Fields served its purpose. It became the final resting place for around 120000 souls. Among them were giants of English literature and faith. Daniel Defoe author of Robinson Crusoe lies here. So does John Bunyan author of The Pilgrim’s Progress. William Blake poet artist and visionary is also buried here. His resting place was uncertain for many years. A couple’s painstaking research finally revealed its location. A new headstone marks his final resting place now a point of pilgrimage.

The Great Plague of 1665 cast a long shadow. Bunhill Fields may have served as an emergency burial ground. There’s uncertainty though. Records are incomplete. The grim reality of that time is chilling. Weekly death tolls soared to hundreds.

Bunhill Fields closed as a burial ground in 1854. A new Burial Act forced the closure of all central London graveyards. The site’s future was uncertain. A Gospel Tent then an “Iron Room” hosted services. An adult school followed. Eventually the Bunhill Memorial Buildings were constructed.

Today Bunhill Fields Meeting House continues its legacy. It’s a vibrant hub for Quaker worship and community. It’s also a place of quiet reflection. A place to remember the remarkable lives buried here. Their stories echo through the ages a testament to courage faith and dissent. The whispers of the past still resonate within these walls a reminder of a rich and complex history. Take a moment absorb the atmosphere. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. Bunhill Fields Meeting House is a living monument to those who dared to be different.
