Tucked away on Avenue Denfert-Rochereau, the Monastère de la Visitation whispers tales of resilience and devotion. The Order of the Visitation, founded in 1610 by Saint François de Sales and Sainte Jeanne Françoise de Chantal, sought to provide solace to the poor. The Monastère de la Visitation in Paris, their sixth monastery, arrived in 1619, thanks to the founders themselves. Imagine the bustling streets of 17th-century Paris as the nuns established their presence. Their first home wasn’t here. They moved several times before settling on Rue Saint Antoine in 1629. Ironically, that site is now the Temple Sainte Marie, a Protestant church. The French Revolution scattered the sisters. Yet, their spirit remained unbroken. A small group reunited in 1807. They eventually found their way to this very street, then called Rue d’Enfer, in 1841. The Monastère de la Visitation stands as a testament to their enduring faith. Within these walls, the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus holds a special place, particularly after the apparitions to Marguerite Marie Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in 1673. The Virgin Mary, a constant source of inspiration, guides their prayers. Here, amidst the urban hum, the nuns continue their tradition of prayer and service. They maintain a distribution network for communion hosts for local parishes. They carry the city in their prayers, offering a sanctuary of peace and reflection.
