This church isn’t dedicated to the saint from Hippo. Instead, it honors St. Augustine of Canterbury, the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Saint Augustine Anglican Church sits in Devonport, a charming area across the Waitemata Harbour from Auckland City. Think of Devonport as a boot. Saint Augustine’s sits on the toe, known as Stanley Point, while its sister church, Holy Trinity, rests back in the heel. Saint Augustine Anglican Church serves mainly the residents of Stanley Point. The church holds its own services and programs. It complements the larger Holy Trinity church, the main Anglican center of the parish. You’ll find this charming church at 95 Calliope Road. While exploring the area, you might come across older maps. Interestingly, some label the church’s location as “Naval Hosp.” This is a curious error since Saint Augustine Anglican Church predates the nearby hospital, which actually lies further east. The church often refers to its eastern side as the “hospital side,” a nod to this geographical quirk.
