Gazing across the vineyards, can you sense the history whispering through the vines? This is Bodenheim. A village steeped in over 1250 years of stories. Bodenheim first appeared in records in 754. The village celebrated its 1250th jubilee in 2004. Bodenheim is located about 12 km south of Mainz. It sits at the edge of the Frankfurt Rhine Main Region. Winegrowing significantly shapes the character of Bodenheim. Numerous wineries and Straußwirtschaften (seasonal wine taverns) dot the landscape, inviting you to savor the local wines.

Bodenheim has a rich history intertwined with wine, religion, and even tragedy. The village was once under the authority of Saint Alban’s Abbey in Mainz. A humorous legend tells of a provost who requested minting rights from the emperor. The emperor mocked him, saying, “He wants to mint coins? An old ass shall he mint!” Ironically, the ass later became a symbol on Bodenheim’s coat of arms. A darker chapter unfolded in the 17th century when Bodenheim became a center of witch hunts. At least 27 people lost their lives due to malicious accusations, horrific imprisonment, and brutal torture.

The 20th century also brought its share of tragedy. In 1988, two US F-16C fighter jets collided near Bodenheim, crashing over an uninhabited area. One pilot ejected safely, but Captain Mike Crandall tragically lost his life. Today, Bodenheim is a thriving village. It’s the seat of the Verbandsgemeinde (collective municipality) of Bodenheim. The village boasts several historical and cultural attractions. Saint Alban’s Church, a late-classicist hall church built between 1828 and 1830, stands as a testament to the village’s enduring spirit. The Evangelical Church, built in the Gothic Revival style in 1887, and the Maria-Oberndorf pilgrimage chapel, dating back to the 13th century, offer glimpses into the village’s religious heritage. The historic Town Hall, built in 1608, showcases beautiful Franconian-Hessian timber-frame construction.

Bodenheim offers a variety of activities for visitors. You can stroll through the vineyards, visit the wineries, and explore the historic town center. Bodenheim’s story is one of resilience, tragedy, and the enduring spirit of a winegrowing community. As you leave Bodenheim, carry with you the whispers of history and the taste of its renowned wines.
