“Ahlers? Anyone here related to a Mr. Ahlers?” The name echoes around us, a question hanging in the air as we gather before this impressive building. This is Villa Ahlers. It stands as a testament to Bremen’s rich architectural heritage.

Villa Ahlers is located at Parkallee 117, at the corner of Benquestrasse in Bremen-Schwachhausen. It is near the Bürgerpark. The villa emerged in 1904. Eduard Gildemeister and Wilhelm Sunkel designed it. In 1978, Villa Ahlers earned recognition as a protected Bremen cultural monument.

Parkallee developed into a street of villas around 1890. Many buildings on this street enjoy landmark status. Villa Ahlers is one of them.

Notice the two-story structure. See its partially basement level? Observe the small, round tower stretching three stories high. And what about the Mansard roof, partly designed as a clipped gable roof? These elements define the Jugendstil style of Villa Ahlers. They incorporate playful architectural details. These were popular around the turn of the century. The half-timbered details on the gable are a good example.

It is believed that a shipowner named Ahlers commissioned the villa. Gildemeister and Sunkel also designed other notable buildings in Schwachhausen. These include St. Remberti Church, Villa Lüdemann, and Villa Frese.

In 1979, a modern three-story residential building was added. It stands next to Villa Ahlers at Benquestrasse 2. Kurt Schmidt designed it. This addition aimed to preserve the landmarked villa.

Today, Villa Ahlers houses a dance school. It is called Schipfer-Hausa. You will also find law firms and other service providers here. Villa Ahlers has adapted to modern times while retaining its historical charm. This blending of old and new is evident. It reflects Bremen’s spirit of progress and preservation. Take a moment to appreciate this architectural gem. It is a reminder of Bremen’s past. It also highlights the city’s ongoing commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
